How the day is built
Typical awake times at 5 to 6 months run 2 hours to 2 hours 45 minutes, shortest in the morning and longest before bed. From 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, three 1-hour naps leave 9 hours awake, split 2 hr, 2 hr 10 min, 2 hr 20 min, 2 hr 30 min. That is 3 hours of day sleep and 12 hours overnight.
Three naps or two
Some babies are already on two naps at this age. If the third nap gets hard to fit before bedtime, compare both days on the 3 to 2 nap transition page.
When the clocks change
Under one, the plan moves the whole day 15 minutes a night. The fall back planner shifts this same schedule for November 1, 2026.
Questions parents ask next
How many naps does a 6-month-old take?
Usually three, and sometimes two. The planner uses three for 5 to 6 months and two from 7 months.
How long should a 6-month-old be awake between naps?
Typically 2 hours to 2 hours 45 minutes, with the shortest stretch in the morning. Your baby’s sleepy cues come first.
What if my baby wakes at 6:00 am?
Type 6:00 am into the sentence above. The naps slide earlier and the awake stretches are refitted to the bedtime you give.
Can I get reminders?
Yes. Add to my calendar saves a file with nap and bedtime reminders for the next two weeks, 30 minutes ahead.
