Bedtime Shift

Clocks go back Sunday, November 1

Daylight saving time for toddlers, in two nights

Toddlers can move 30 minutes a night, so a one-hour change takes two nights. For a 2-year-old who sleeps 7:30 pm to 7:00 am: bed at 8:00 pm on Friday, October 30, 8:30 pm on Saturday, and 7:30 pm on the new clock on Sunday, November 1. The nap moves with it.

Your plan

The calendar file gives you one reminder a night, 30 minutes before bedtime.

General information, not medical advice. Ask your pediatrician about your child's sleep.

    The nap moves too

A 2-year-old’s nap at 12:00 pm moves to 12:30 pm on Friday and 1:00 pm on Saturday, then back to 12:00 pm on the new clock on Sunday. Moving only bedtime leaves the nap too close to it.

    Late starters

Started late? Choose “on the day, then step back”: on Sunday a 7:30 pm bedtime becomes 6:30 pm on the new clock, then 7:00 pm on Monday and 7:30 pm on Tuesday. See adjusting after the clocks change.

    A baby too?

Babies under one move in 15-minute steps and start two nights sooner. Add a sibling above; each child gets a lane and reminders. See twins and siblings.

    Questions parents ask next

How do I adjust my toddler to daylight saving time?

Move bedtime, wake-up and the nap 30 minutes later each night for the two nights before Sunday, November 1, then use your usual times on the new clock.

Why 30 minutes for toddlers and 15 for babies?

The planner uses smaller steps under one year so each day changes less; from one, 30 minutes makes the move in two nights.

My toddler wakes at 6:00 am after the change. What now?

That is 7:00 am on the old clock. “On the day, then step back” moves the whole day 30 minutes a night toward your usual times.
